Kim Powell is a registered nurse who started off as a CNA and worked her way up from LPN to RN to now a RN BSN. She currently works at an INOVA hospital and their stroke/neuro unit, and has been there for about 3 years now. In the interview she explained that she really enjoys her job, her personality allows her to really connect with her patients. She believes nursing is a very rewarding job but you have to have the heart, physical and mental strength to do the job. Some areas where her job uses sustainable practices include: switching from plastic to paper cups and straws and utilizing recycling measures throughout the hospital. However, Mrs.Powell includes details about equipment and machines they use to run tests and how they use a lot of energy on a daily basis. In all she believes that the hospital is doing the best they can to be sustainable and climate friendly. Something I learned from doing this interview is that nursing comes with a lot of paperwork. Mrs.Powell explains that at the hospital there is a lot of paperwork and charting they have to do which kind of takes time away from their patient interactions. Many people, myself included, saw nursing as a hands on job without taking into consideration the amount of paperwork that has to be completed.
