HMSV 346- Diversity Issues
Through the Continuum of Cultural Competency, I was raised in a very rural type of upbringing and has a Christian Southern Baptist, we believed that different cultural experiences were just different from ours and should never be explored outside of our daily norms. I believe before I got to ODU and attend the human services program I was at the Cultural Blindness stage, this is because I would always treat people the same and would look outside of their culture and treat them as I would anyone else. This could be determined as good and bad but as time went on I went on to serve in the military with those of different creeds and nationalities and that is where I progressed to the pre-competence stage and I understood a little about how other people live and how you should respect the culture in which they are coming from. Through my time with the human service program, I have learned to respect those of all cultures and as a duty to the client, I must educate myself of those cultures so that I can better serve them.
