Philosophy of Music Education

Almost everyone around the world has music in their life either by listening, playing, singing, composing, or reading it. It is important that children are offered opportunities for music education. However, many schools begin to remove this curriculum to provide more space for the main subjects. I believe the purpose of music education is to provide students an equal opportunity to learn music. With music education in schools, students are able to obtain a free education about music. Because of that, families that can’t afford the cost of private lessons have a lesser burden to care for and focus on. Furthermore, I believe that music education can help students physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally. It helps children in every part of their lives. I want music education to inspire students to appreciate and love music.

As a student in music education, it is important to listen, participate, and engage. It is hard to learn and understand music if one just memorizes things. It is important for students to connect with other students to develop coordination and others. Students are typically very social and by connecting them, it can help to build relationships by giving them experiences. Forming a small ensemble or doing an assignment together can create bonds between the students and may give the students something to remember together in the future. Students should incorporate what they learn to other areas in education or in life. For example, students can further their understanding of pattern-recognition or math skills from playing music or students can learn to be responsible which is an important skill in their futures. Students not only learn music skills but also skills like coordination or memory to help them in the future.

As a teacher in music education, it is essential that a safe and positive environment is provided for students to learn. With a safe environment, students can learn and fix their mistakes without severe consequences. I want to challenge and inspire growth in students as a teacher. I do not want the students to be stuck in one place in life and in music. No one should just focus on the easy things or else they will never improve and will be stuck on doing the easy things. Challenging students allow them to know that to improve it requires dedication, discipline, and practice. I hope to create activities that will cause students to engage and be active. It is boring to provide just a lecture. Children need to move around or else their attention will be somewhere else. In addition, as a teacher, knowledge needs to be passed on to the students for them to appreciate music. People will need to know why music appears to be what it is.

Besides teaching the students in the classroom, it is important to communicate with the community. It allows the benefits of music to be promoted throughout the community so that more children can receive the benefits of music education. For example, the community can know that learning music can bring a sense of achievement or that music can bring teamwork among the students. Another important aspect is that music can be presented to the public. The students’ families would love to hear their kids play and see the progress the child made. The public can see the students’ hard work to achieving an excellent performance for the public to listen. It is also essential to connect with others in the community to help students. Students can work with other people and can receive different pieces of advice or opinions to improve.

My goal for my students is for them to have fun learning in a musical environment and to always challenge themselves. I want them to always have the thought of becoming better.
