One economic theory that relates to the letter is the rational choice theory which states that an individual or business will make choices in their best interest. Rational choice theory is seen in the what are we doing and what can you do sections. In this case the platform provider believed it was in their best interest to work with a cybersecurity firm. On the other hand, the business provided suggestions and not orders to the individual with the assumption that the individual will make the choice that is best for them. Another theory that relates to the letter is the Laissez-fare economic theory which states that government should only intervene in the economy to protect individuals’ inalienable rights. This can be seen in the letter where it states that law enforcement is investigating and asked the notification to the customers be delayed for their investigation. Conflict theory relates to the letter due to the assumption that the attacker will use the stolen information in a malicious way. Structural functionalism can be seen in the letter in that each individual and organization have their own roles. In the letter the business has the role of stopping the attack and increasing their security, law enforcement is trying to catch the attacker while the customer has the role of protecting themselves by monitoring their accounts.
