In my opinion, out of the eleven things people unknowingly do online the five most serious violations are faking your identity online, bullying and trolling, using other people’s internet network, sharing passwords, addresses or photos of others and collecting information about children. Faking one’s identity online is a serious offense especially if one uses someone else’s identity. Using someone else’s identity is identity theft and is punishable by law. Although lying about your age, name, or other characteristic is not illegal, it has emotional and mental consequences for victims who believed the identity of the person they were talking to was true. Bullying and trolling is a serious offense because it also leads to mental and emotional damage to the victims. If the mental and emotional damage is too much, victims can end up taking their own lives or taking revenge on their bullies. In both scenarios, there are more victims. The families and loved ones of the victims are also affected. Using other people’s internet network is a serious offense because it is theft if there is no permission. Individuals pay to have internet service. Additionally, using someone else’s network can have negative consequences to the owner of the network if the perpetrator uses the network for illegal activities. Sharing passwords, addresses or photos of others is a serious offense because it is an invasion of privacy and can also lead to negative situations. The individuals whose information are leaked becomes vulnerable and can result in them being victimized in cases such as robbery and stalking. Collecting information about children is a serious offense because children are vulnerable and are unable to protect themselves. Mental and emotional damage that occurs due to the leak of personal information is much larger for children because of their current emotional and mental state.
