The principles of science are determinism, relativism, objectivity, parsimony, ethical neutrality, and empiricism. All the principles of science are helpful in the study of cybersecurity through a social science lens. A researcher should keep in mind all the principles of science when conducting their research. For example, ethical neutrality means that scientists must maintain ethical standards when conducting their research and similar to ethical neutrality is objectivity which means that researchers must be free of opinions. Relativism means that all things are related while determinism means behavior is caused, determined or influenced by preceding events. Empiricism states that researchers should only study behavior that is real to the senses. On the other hand, parsimony dictates that researchers should explain in the simplest way possible. When studying cybersecurity, it is important to be objective and maintain ethical standards due to the sensitive nature of cybersecurity information and the potential social implications. Determinism in regards to cybersecurity can be used to develop cybersecurity measures based on patterns of past events and threats. It can also be used in finding perpetrators using profiling of previous cases. Overall, the principles of science contribute to the development of cybersecurity measures and determination of social implications of different aspects of cybersecurity.
