CYSE201S Journal Entry 5

My ranking of motives from 1 to 7 is multiple reasons, for money, revenge, recognition, political, entertainment, and boredom. I ranked multiple reasons as the one that made the most sense because there are always multiple reasons that an individual is pushed to commit crime. One reason may outweigh the others and is the biggest factor but the other reasons are still present and contribute to an individual committing crime. I placed money as a motive second because money is a requirement in this world. With money individuals will be able to attain other goals and objects that they desire. Revenge and recognition are tied in their positions due to the emotional factor both motives have. Humans are emotional beings that will be pushed by their emotions to commit crimes in order to gain some sort of satisfaction. The reason a political motive is towards the end is because there are other ways besides committing crimes that an individual can do to influence politics. An individual can protest, vote, run for office, and lobby in order to influence politics or get their political views heard. They do not have to resort to crime in order to do so. Similar to a political motive, entertainment and boredom are ranked as the bottom two because there are other ways to be entertained and to deal with boredom. Individuals should not resort to crime for fun or to get rid of their boredom. Instead, they can engage in activities or find a hobby.
