The media influences our understanding about cybersecurity by creating stereotypes. Media typically depicts cybersecurity and hacking to be done very quickly and easily. As shown in the video, many films and shows will have scenes in which a hacker uses a tool or types a few words into their computer in order to gain access to the information or computer system they are trying to hack. Although there are tools available, in reality hacking and cybersecurity takes longer than a few taps on the keyboard and more than a few hours. The ease in which hackers are able to accomplish their mission in media also sends the message that no one is safe and cybersecurity efforts are meaningless due to the fact that hackers can get into the system if they want to. It is true no one is safe however, cybersecurity is more important than ever. The media also paints certain stereotypes on individuals associated with cybersecurity. Individuals in cybersecurity are always shown as being outcasts of society. Individuals in cybersecurity are diverse and not just the smart young adults that are rebelling against society or living in their parents’ basements. Additionally, certain scenes in media portray cybersecurity as being difficult. For example, some scenes in media will show lines of binary digits or codes running through the screen at a fast pace as well as many unfamiliar words. Cybersecurity individuals do require a certain level of knowledge however, a majority of what can be seen on a computer screen during cybersecurity related activities can actually be understood by any individual. Overall, the media tends to push stereotypes and misconceptions in our understanding of cybersecurity.
