While looking at the descriptions of these jobs, I detected a few trends. Some of the main ideas and objectives of these jobs are securing, analyzing, and designing technology to keep certain information away from the public eye. Two of the cybersecurity jobs that caught my attention were a Cryptanalyst, someone who “deciphers coded messages without a cryptographic key”, and a Threat Hunter, a person who “searches networks to detect and isolate advanced threats.” A cryptanalyst’s main role is to analyze and break down encoded information, so someone with this job is more proficient if they have knowledge of technology and experience working with computers. In addition, knowledge of encryption techniques and mathematics benefits them when they have to detect weaknesses and vulnerabilities in encryption systems. I chose the Threat Hunter because as a kid I would collect viruses on my computer by using websites that were corrupted, so it’s interesting to see that someone’s job is to detect threats and eliminate them. A person who has to surf the web and detect defects has to be able to think analytically and pay attention to detail to identify threats. It was surprising to see how many different jobs there are in the realm of cybersecurity. It is fascinating to see how many different opportunities someone can take with an interest in cybersecurity and it makes sense that there are many positions unfilled in the U.S.
