Learning a new language isn’t important all by itself. It can show intelligence, or improve your memory, but that’s not why you do it. Learning a language is about communication. You get to reach out and experience a different part of the world. Not only do you get to mingle with new people, but you gain a new perspective. Often languages are riddled with nuance that put you in the place of what it would be like to grow up learning this. Languages are important because relationships are.

I’m studying French for a couple of reasons. One, I need it for my diploma, but I could choose any language for that. I chose french specifically because I really enjoy the French culture. As a child, I grew up watching French television sometimes. Most popularly, Miraculous. Then my family, due to military reasons, moved to Belgium. Now I have an excuse that I need to learn french to go and visit. It’s for the sake of interest and opportunity.
