My most interesting “fun fact” about french culture has to be this; the word mademoiselle is banned. This seems ridiculous, why would they ban a word referring to ladies it doesn’t really make logical sense. To be more specific, it’s banned on all legal documentation. There was a major revolt by the feminist movement in France. Madam and mademoiselle had distinct meanings. Madam referred to a lady who is married, and mademoiselle referred to one who was not. You may think this is fine, we have ms. and mrs. after all, but there’s a distinct difference. These go on people’s records. Women would be categorized by whether they were married or not. Not to mention the cultural significance of being considered a “madam”. The movement aimed to create the message that “it doesn’t matter if you’re married, you’re a madam no matter what.”
