This seems ridiculous, why would they ban a word referring to ladies it doesn&#8217;t really make logical sense. To be more specific, it&#8217;s banned on all legal documentation. There was a major revolt by the feminist movement in France. Madam and mademoiselle had distinct meanings. Madam referred to a lady who is married, and mademoiselle referred to one who was not. You may think this is fine, we have ms. and mrs. after all, but there&#8217;s a distinct difference. These go on people&#8217;s records. Women would be categorized by whether they were married or not. Not to mention the cultural significance of being considered a &#8220;madam&#8221;. The movement aimed to create the message that &#8220;it doesn&#8217;t matter if you&#8217;re married, you&#8217;re a madam no matter what.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My most interesting &#8220;fun fact&#8221; about french culture has to be this; the word mademoiselle is banned.
