Career Paper: Digital Forensic Examiners

Introduction

The field that I am writing about for this paper is digital forensics. I think this field is interesting because it implements two fields that I like learning about, which are cybersecurity and criminal justice. The components of a digital forensic examiner are fascinating because the field involves protecting digital information in cybercrime investigations. Digital forensic examiners have to examine and recover information in order to protect an organization’s or a person’s network. I think a digital forensic examiner is intertwined with social science principles and how society functions in dealing with technological innovations. Additionally, this field demands certain attributes from a person, such as problem-solving skills and thinking critically, to solve societal problems.

Digital forensic examiners dependence on social sciences principles

Digital forensic examiners target goals are to recover, examine, and protect digital information for cybercrime investigations. Professionals in this field depend on social science principles in order to achieve their main goals. The main social science principles that are intertwined with digital forensics examiners are criminology, psychology, and sociology. Additionally, this field depends on the main social science principles due to the fact that technology forensic examiners have to be able to understand these social science principles in order to succeed in examining and protecting digital information for cybercrime investigations.

Explanation of Career Dependence on Principles

The career of a digital forensic examiner depends on the social science principle of criminology because the field involves examiners evaluating cybercrime investigations by investigating crimes implemented with the use of technology. The career requires the social science principles of psychology because technology forensic examiners have to understand the reason(s) a cybercriminal would perform a cybercrime in a certain way. An example is a cybercriminal using the phishing method to invade an organization or individual network. Digital forensic examiners understanding of the psychology component of a criminal can possibly help them recover data from the damaged technological system. The social science principle of sociology is important because cybercrimes tend to affect the world in some way. Therefore, digital forensic examiners have to recognize how cybercrime causes disruption to society, especially in terms of finances.

Key Concepts and Their Application to Digital Forensics Examiners

The key concepts I learned that apply to digital forensic examiners are components that relate to cybersecurity and criminal justice. These components are cyber criminology (mod 4), social cybersecurity (mod 10), social media and culture (mod 9), and part one of conceptualizing cybersecurity as a crime (mod 12). I selected these topics as key concepts that relate to technology forensics professionals because these key concepts are implemented in the profession. Technological forensics examiners have to understand the key concepts to recognize details in cybercrime investigations and analyze the crime investigation thoroughly.

Key Concepts in Relation to Digital Forensics Examiners

Social cybersecurity (mod 10) is a key concept relating to digital forensic researchers because social media is an accessible platform for cybercriminals to steal information from people. Technology professionals who acknowledge the components of social cybersecurity can help make media platforms safer for users. Social media and culture (mod 9) is a key concept that relates to this profession because the mod discussed the social norms of cybersecurity, such as users not disclosing personal information online. This can help examiners recognize ways the cybercriminal received personal information from the victim, especially if the victim did not share their information with anyone. Cybercriminology and conceptualizing cybersecurity as a crime are intertwined with this career because the description of a digital forensic examiner is to discover, recover, and protect information for cybercrime and non-criminal investigations.

Digital Forensic Examiners and Marginalized Groups

Cybercriminals usually have a plan for the methods of cyberattacks they are going to perform and their targets. According to the article titled Minorities and Women Are More Likely Victims of Cyber Crime, cybercriminals like to perform attacks on finance and marketing companies because there are many benefits for the e cybercriminals. Cybercriminals also like to aim cyberattacks at specific marginalized groups. According to CPO Magazine, authors state how women and minorities are most vulnerable to cyberattacks due to the fact that cybercriminals feel like government officials would not take their reports seriously compared to other marginalized groups and societal views of women and minorities.

Challenges marginalize groups Experience

There are many reasons discussed in various articles that explain why women and minorities are more vulnerable to cyberattacks than other demographics. The article discussed how women and minorities are vulnerable to cyberattacks due to the lack of education these demographics have about cybersecurity. I learned in this article that there are more demographics that experience cyber victimization, such as members of society in the age range of 30 to 39 years old and 65 to 100 years old and people coming from low-income households. Depending on the motive of the cybercriminal, they may attack a specific marginalized group. In addition, the article demonstrates how cyberattacks directed at certain marginalized groups affect the demographic perspective on technology.

Digital Forensic Examiners Connection to Society

Technology is used on a daily basis in society. The world manufactures more advanced technological machinery throughout the years, which provides multiple benefits to society, but along with these advantages of technological advancement, there are also disadvantages. Digital forensic examiners relate to society because of the disadvantages of technology. Since cybercrimes are common in society and contribute to major problems for infrastructure, digital forensic examiners can help organizations recover lost information by examining faults within the system and establishing regulations the organization can use to protect their network from experiencing future cyberattacks.

Conclusion

To summarize, my paper showed insight into the career path of digital forensic examiners. This article discussed how digital forensic examiners relate to different areas of society. I discussed the career involvement of the examiner’s knowledge of social science principles in order to solve cybercrime investigations. The article also explains certain key concepts that are intertwined with the workforce, such as cyber criminology and social cybersecurity. It’s important for digital forensic examiners to understand the complex attributes of technology and cybercriminals. The expansion of technology and cybersecurity encourages technological forensic professionals to study the relationship between cybercrime and society. The profession is important because of the increasing trend of cybercrime around the world.
