Journal #4: Compare cybersecurity risks in the U.S. and another country.

Even though cybersecurity is a universal technology, its risks can vary from country to country. With the technological advancements in the United States, cyber risk is constantly on the rise. On the other hand, this is also indicative of an increase in cybersecurity advancements. As technology advances cause cyber risks to rise, as do the technologies that protect us from these cyber risks. Despite the worldwide necessity for cybersecurity, network protection, and computer security, the Philippines is especially vulnerable to cyber attack. This is because even though there is a widespread use of the internet across the Philippines, there is a larger lack of cybersecurity awareness as well as a cybersecurity infrastructure that is less developed compared to the United States. One of the most dangerous hacking techniques in the United States is known as social engineering and relies largely on tricking humans into making errors in order to breach a security system. According to Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations report, 85% of all data breaches involve human interaction (Burbidge, 2021). In the Philippines, recent trends are demonstrating that ransomware attacks instead are on the rise, targeting financial, government, healthcare, education, and retail institutions (Cyfirma, 2023). The Southeast Asian country is vulnerable in particular because of its ties with the United States in addition to the conflict over Taiwan. The list of targeted industries in the United States is similar to the Philippines with the most vulnerable to cyber attacks being financial, healthcare, corporations, and higher education institutions. Even though both the United States and the Philippines are affected by several similar tactics such as ransomware, distributed denial-of-service attacks and DDoS attacks, the Philippines seems to be facing a more complex and multifaceted cybersecurity picture than the United States. The Philippines is in more of an urgent need for improved cybersecurity tactics compared to the United States.
