The principles we learned about in Module 2 are relativism, objectivity, parsimony, empiricism, skepticism, ethical neutrality, and determinism. Relativism states that all things are related and this ties into cybersecurity because of the interdisciplinary nature of the study. Objectivity encourages researchers to conduct research from an unbiased perspective which is necessary when cybersecurity researchers study their relationships with other social sciences. Parsimony means keeping explanations as simple as possible which can aid in educating normal people about the importance of cybersecurity. Empiricism means relying on senses to study behavior, which helps conclusions be made from hard facts and evidence and not “gut feelings”. Ethical neutrality means adhering to ethical standards when conducting research and one example is to protect privacy of research subjects. Determinism means that actions are influenced by previous events which can help researchers understand motivations behind cybercrime. All of these principles are interdisciplinary but are important in cybersecurity.
