I scored a 3/9 on the Social Media Disorder scale, which was actually better than I thought I would score. As a college student now in my 20s, my generation is very prone to social media use. I think that the items on the scale are very extreme and could definitely be indicative of some obsessive behavior. I most commonly face neglecting other activities such as homework because I would want to use social media such as Instagram and TikTok. It is also easy to fail at attempting to spend less time on social media because many people have anxious attachments or such to social media. However, when social media starts to negatively affect one’s personal relationships, that might be an indicator of an unhealthy obsession with social media. I think that different patterns could be found across the world due to variations in social norms, access to social media as a result of geographic location or economic levels, and variations in different cultures in general.
