The general deterrence theory suggests that people are fundamentally rational and rationalize their behavior before committing a crime, which is what the offender in this breach did when they decided to infiltrate this company for personal financial gain by evaluating the cost-benefit calculation of their actions. The neutralization theory also suggests that people will find justification or rationalize their wrongdoings. The business denied their responsibility in the crime that occurred and instead redirected the blame to their third party platform.
