Criminology is a major at Old Dominion University that deals with detecting crimes, considering how to respond to and punish crimes, and developing strategies to prevent these crimes. It studies who commits these crimes and why, as well as patterns that guide behaviors leading to crimes. This links to Cybersecurity through cybercrime in which computers are used as weapons. Criminology is related to Cybersecurity through the means of studying the crimes behind cyber attacks as well as the criminals. Any online attack is a cybercrime that can be prevented with Cybersecurity and any person behind cyber attacks is a criminal.

Psychology studies mind and behavior which can relate to analyzing criminals and their behavior patterns. Hacking can be related to trust, behaving how others think we behave, commitment, fabricating identity, and scarcity. This is similar to criminology as well in the way that they both have the capacity to study the criminals and motive behind cyber attack crimes.

On the same page as studying behavior patterns and motives is sociology which studies social life, change, causes, and consequences of human behavior. Sociology studies how people may act within groups or how groups affect their behavior. Social factors can impact the rate of cyber offense, including technology. Impact of technology on society can impact cyber offending as well. The way people interact online is also a component of sociology that can relate to cyber attacks or cyber offense.

Computer science is also another major that relates heavily to cybersecurity because they both rely heavily on a deep understanding of computers and their networks. Cybersecurity is a field which protects networks and prevents cyber attacks and so an understanding of computer components as well as computer networks. This understanding of computer science fundamentals is essential to building security and improving defenses of online networks and information.
