After I do the research and study about supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system I found, SCADA is a system involving industrial control system that uses to control or manages infrastructure processes for example gas pipeline, electric current, water pipeline, etc. that also including the facility-based processes and industrial processes like production or power generation. In the present day, we could find this SCADA system in every place that relates or has important to the industry such as space stations, nuclear power plants, airports, etc.
It is the centralized system for controlling, monitoring, and managing all of the subsystems that are involved in the large area because the industry needs to control all processes to make sure that processes will be a success in the proper way that including safe to everyone both inside the organization and outside the organization. Moreover, it is the system that can suddenly recover the damage by automatically performing such as the remote terminal units (RTUs) and the programmable logic controllers (PLCs). For example, the SCADA system will use programmable logic controllers to control the temperature that will automatically change it if the temperature is too high or too low that should it be. SCADA system almost has the distributed database as known as a tag database that contains data in every point or tag and every point also has recorded for the history of that point for know what the matter is when it has some problem. Even, the SCADA system that automatically does the process could be an error but also has the human-machine interface (HMI) that gives the processes data to the human operator to see what is happening through a mimic diagram (provide detail and information) that can guide the operator and maintenance procedures.
If we don’t have this SCADA system, it will create many vulnerabilities with critical infrastructure systems because the infrastructure system is the system that will affect every subsystem if the infrastructure system is damaged, the subsystem in the large area can get damaged also. For example, if the electric system is damaged by something, it can affect another system that needs electricity for operating. It can slow or stop the procedures when it happens. It could be the one way that terrorists use by compromising the system or destroying it to make chaos that affects monetary and stability to the nation and in the worst case, it could make many people die from it. For example, if it has some terrorist groups compromise the infrastructure system in the nuclear power plants that easy to make it explode, it will take a risk to many people’s life. So, that is why we need the SCADA system for infrastructure system that can suddenly automatically recover the problem when it happens and maintenance procedures through HMI even it is not a perfect system that has weaknesses, but it also can mitigate the problem and effect of the problem.
