End of the Semester Reflection

Throughout this semester I have grown in many ways. I have developed better studying habits, gotten more comfortable with asking for help, and figured out what I want to do in the future. For this year, I expected to become very overwhelmed with schoolwork and get involved in a lot of campus groups. Homework did not really meet my expectations because I am only overwhelmed sometimes. I do not know if it is because a lot of my classes are related to each other, but my major assignments are spaced out for all my classes. Since they are spaced out, I only get overwhelmed for a little before I am back to normal. Joining groups also did not meet my expectations because I have not found a group that I like yet. One thing I wish I knew 14 weeks ago is that it is okay to say no to plans so I can get work done. Earlier this year I would always say yes to my friends making plans even though I knew I had work to get done. Now I know how to better manage my time between the two and that it is nice to have a friend around when doing homework.

For each class, I spend between one to two hours studying. This changes based on the topic we are learning for each class. If I am struggling, I will add a couple more hours, and if I am confident I will relax a little with the studying. My studying habits have changed because I realized how much I like using index cards. I originally only used index cards for sociology to learn keywords but then I started using it for chemistry and it has really helped me. I also learned that I love doing homework and studying in the Webb Center by Starbucks. Before I would study in an Owens common area but I would always get distracted because of how quiet it was. In the Webb Center, it’s not too loud and not too quiet. A resource I learned about this semester is some Youtube channels. A specific account I like to watch is Khan Academy. That channel breaks topics down into really simple terms that are easy to understand. As I learn more things I plan on finding more videos to help me better my understanding. Some study habits and techniques I plan on using next semester is the index cards. It really helps me with memorizing topics for tests.

These classes were related through different topics that were brought up in class. There were multiple occasions where a professor had asked if another professor discussed a topic yet. I also had a professor use the same groups from another class project for a group project in his class. This helped keep things organized because the groups were already used to working together and forms of communication. The event most beneficial to me was the Chrysler Museum Trip. I am not from the area so it was nice to see the museum for the first time. Since it was my first time visiting the museum I went around to most of the exhibits and read about them. It was interesting and helped me learn a lot. We went to the museum to look at injustice. Even before I went on the specific tour with my professor, I picked up on injustice in some of the pieces that he would point out on the tour. This event helped me notice more about injustice and develop a better understanding.
