Journal entry 9

Complete the Social Media Disorder scale. How did you score? What do you think about the items in the scale? Why do you think that different patterns are found across the world?

On the Social Media Disorder scale, I scored a 3-5 (Yes: 3 times and No: 5 times).

The items in the scale reflect aspects of problematic or potentially addictive social media use. The questions are designed to assess various dimensions of someone’s relationship with social media and the potential impact it may have on their well-being. It appears to draw on themes related to preoccupation, dissatisfaction, negative emotions, unsuccessful attempts to control usage, interference with other activities, interpersonal conflicts, and deceptive behavior. Therefore, people can use some of these patterns without it impacting their overall well-being.

As for the global patterns in social media use and its potential negative consequences, it’s a complex interplay of cultural, social, economic, and individual factors. Different cultures have varying attitudes toward technology, social interaction, and privacy. In some cultures, there may be a more general approach to online communication, while in others, individual privacy may be highly valued. Social media use can serve as a coping mechanism for dealing with stress, loneliness, or boredom; and for some can be a form of communication, entertainment, or information.
