“Reflections on My DOJ Internship: Insights from the Second 50 Hours”
I have continued to gain important skills in Insider Threat Mitigation and Cybersecurity Operations throughout the last 50-hours of my internship with the Department of Justice (DOJ) from (February 14, 2025 – March 21, 2025). Due to my work, I now have a greater understanding of incident management, security policies, and investigation techniques, all of which are necessary for protecting government networks.
I reviewed documents about Insider Threat Mitigation and the Insider Threat Policy as a major part of my work. The detection and mitigation of internal threats that could threaten national security depend on these regulations. Through the examination of these resources, I gained information on how businesses keep updated on suspicious activity within their networks and take proper action. Additionally, I attended several meetings on subjects including the DOJ Report on Insider Threat, which monitors employee network activity and access, and the Cybersecurity Committee Meeting, which addressed phishing threats, upgrades to Single Sign-On, and improvements to security procedures.
My experience has also had an impact on technical training. I took part in discussions about training for Tenable and Nessus, which are tools for network scanning and vulnerability management. These tools are necessary for identifying any infrastructure issues in an organization. Examining incident response procedures and comprehending the actions performed during a cybersecurity event were important parts of my work. I gained knowledge on how different threat actors function as well as the steps required to successfully contain and mitigate threats.
In conclusion, my internship has continued my desire to work in government cybersecurity, especially in positions that include analyzing cyberthreats and putting policies into action. My understanding of the significance of cybersecurity in safeguarding national interests has improved because of every activity, including going over documents, attending training, and taking part in meetings. In the upcoming weeks, I’m looking forward to gaining even more information and skills.
