The rise of the inclusion of technology in the workplace has created a variety of complications. A very prominent problem that’s been observed is that because technology is rapidly progressing and quick becoming more of a necessity in societies daily lives it makes it more difficult to find the individuals that are performing harmful acts on the computer versus when they do it in person. Workers perform many different cyber deviant acts while at work such as, online gambling, web pornography, software piracy, hacking, data theft, cyber aggression, e-harassment on the office systems, and so on. There have been various causes of deviance in the workplace. First, there is dispositional these situations includes the individuals personality, hidden negative emotions towards others that are in the workplace, and coping mechanisms that are developed due to emotional exhaustion. Secondly, there’s organizational factors including the size of the company/organization, the design of the job, stressors from the organization, and various other causes. Thirdly, workplace deviance may be due to situational reasoning. Such as where they work and how their home life is, It has been proven that worker that have been given more flexible options of where and when they work have been less likely to cause workplace deviance.
Because workplace deviances have become such a major concern for so many organizations there has been many studies developed to understand the stressors in an employee’s place of work that triggers the deviant activities being studied. When studied it had shown these activities had not changed, but due to technology becoming a large portion of socializing and working the deviant activities have become more technologically based. Thus, making researchers for the organizations realize when studying workplace deviance for companies they should not only focus on the workers but also the constantly changing technologies that are enabling workers to perform these deviances.
