Community Based Experience

Service Learning Project: Lois Ann’s Hope House

Role

  • Facilitated and provided an oral health workshop to shelter residents
  • Discuss global impacts of oral health
  • explain my role as a public health practitioner

Knowledge

  • It allowed me to gain skills and knowledge to apply in the real world that I may not have necessarily gained in the classroom.
  • Being involved allowed me to become aware of the needs people are facing and how important my role is to help them meet those needs.

Skills

  • Public speaking
    • Presenting my oral health workshop allowed me to brush up on my public speaking skills as I presented to a group of 12 individuals.
  • Switching from using professional jargon to laymen’s terms.
    • Often times, as professionals and practitioners we communicate to others who understand the technical terms, however, in presenting to the community it forced me to simplify the knowledge I was sharing.
  • Organization
    • I had to design, and prepare for the work shop several weeks in advance to ensure I conveyed all of the planned information, which required a lot of organization beforehand.
