Summary/Reflection

For this assignment, I took it upon myself to interview Makeshia Sykes who is a Licensed Practical Nurse Telemedicine Coordinator & Medical Discharge Planner at Deerfield Correctional Center. She has earned her High School and Licensed Practical Nurse Diploma. During the interview, I asked Keisha many questions regarding her life as a nurse and the sustainable practices put forth in her workplace. Keisha’s responses to each question truly showed how passionate she is about her job, and also inspired me. Specifically, where I asked her about the most rewarding aspect of her job, and she responded by saying, “I get joy from actually seeing the guys change their lifestyle to benefit them in the longevity of life, and that’s information that I provided them with. I give them things to think about, to make them care about themselves just as much as I do, and when I see them go forward and practice some of those things. It makes me feel good.” The last question I asked her was what advice she would give someone going into the medical field, and I think that part stood out the most to me. Many nurses complain about their job and it was very helpful to me to see there there are some out here who truly have a passion for what they do for a living. As far as sustainability in her workplace, she stated how a lot of the things they do are state mandated, therefore somethings are beyond her control. One practice of sustainability that she highlighted was being mindful of their waste, such as; where they dispose of it, how much is being used, and etc. Sustainability is important to her because she wants the environment to be safe for those here in the present and the future generations to come. I learned from this interview that I should go into this field with an open mind and heart. Of course there are going to be challenging aspects, as there are any job, I just need to love and take pride in what I do wholeheartedly.
