Study Habits
- What classes are you doing well in, and why?
I am doing very well in, Interpreting American History, the information is being taught well and I am able to understand the readings as well as the discussions. I am also doing well in health professions, I will just need to start focusing more on the capture campus project. I am also doing well in Health Literacy, the teacher explains things to a tea and is very helpful and lets it be known we can always come to her with any questions.
- What classes did you identify as needing assistance in?
The classes I identified as needing assistance were definitely Biology and Math. Considering they are 3 credit classes they are going to be a little more challenging. Also having to put more time into outside learning with these classes because of how demanding they are.
- What changes have you made (i.e. amount of time, location, campus resources, study strategies, etc…)?
I have made changes but, honestly not enough to be completely honest. I am realizing it’s going to take so much out of me to ensure I stay on track with passing these classes. I have been going to tutoring and office hours. Yet it seems like it’s taking so much time to actually understand the information I am being taught regardless of the amount of studying and preparation I am putting in.
Transition to College
- What expectations did you have coming to college?
The expectation of college was, it is going to be difficult. I am going to have to stay attached to purpose the entire time and not get distracted. My vision was I am going to have to find new things that bring me joy so that I don’t go crazy. While also still producing great grades.
- Have those expectations come to fruition, or not?
Yes they have.
- How?
It is in ways challenging. Yet beautiful, you get to view life from a different perspective which is always nice in ways. The work is frustrating and it will never not be.
- In what way is your college experience different from what you expected? It’s different because slowly I am beginning to find balance. I am starting to find my reason. If that makes sense. I have things I want to accomplish so the harsh reality of possibly failing any class is constantly in the back of my mind.
- What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester? The thing that surprised me the most was honestly, how some professors could honestly care less about you or if you pass or fail their classes. I expected that in a way. But actually seeing it is sad.
- If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome?
I would say the toughest challenge is making sure you are eating complete meals and not straight junk. But the obvious toughest challenge is being away from your home. Your family. The place where you genuinely feel safest. I’d say the easiest challenge is overcoming adversity that life is constantly throwing at you. It helps you remember why you’re there and why you really want what you say you want.
- OR If you commute to class: What is the toughest challenge with commuting to campus? Easiest challenge to overcome?
Major
- Name something you have learned about your intended major that you did not know at the beginning of the semester.
I have learned that I will be able to get a job straight out of college working in Rec Therapy. I will also be able to take classes specific to my major next semester. As well as learning about the major as a whole as I recently changed it from exercise science to rec therapy.
- Have your feelings changed about your intended major? List some thoughts you are having. Yes, I have actually just changed my major. Because of the feelings of taking so many math classes.
- Is there another subject (major or minor) that you are interested in learning more about? I would like to learn more about public health.
Connecting to Campus
- Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation.
I failed my first math test. Now almost 3 times a week, I utilize math tutoring.
- Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you?
Yes, by providing great advice while also listening to what I had to say.
- Have you attended an interesting meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved?
I have and I will actually be going to plant trees this sunday. The club is called ASEZ WAO.
