SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Tutorials are available:

Exploring Culture

The product that best helped me gain an understanding of cultural perspectives was the culture module in Lingolearning. It really helped me because it challenged me to do my own research into other cultures.

The cultural module had me pick a country of my choice and do research on different cultural topics within the country that I choose. A lot of times it really made me understand how similar the U.S. culture and other countries cultures really are. Family is a huge aspect in a lot of Spanish speaking countries with is very similar to how it is here in the U.S. This was very evident in the Holiday module where we learned about all the different celebrations and Holidays.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging your immediate community and global community is very important because it allows us to come together to fix issues that we couldn’t solve as individuals.

Reflect on your experience and participation in these communities. Include artifacts such as photos, audio/video clips, etc.

Interpersonal Communication

Communication is a huge tool we live in today. Programs such as TalkAbroad and the discussion boards we did all semesters really increased our learning and allowed us to engage in conversation with other individuals who may have other viewpoints.

We had the opportunity to communicate with different people throughout this semester. One of those opportunities was TalkAbroad. TalkAbroad was the first time I was given the chance to communicate with an individual outside the U.S. The first one was difficult because I was nervous about how I was going to be able to carry on a conversation with someone from a different country. But I overcame that almost immediently because I realized how much we actually had in common. We also had the chance to communicate with our peers through the discussion boards. The discussion boards were a great to have discussions with our own peers that were going through the same struggles that I was going through.

Presentational Speaking

We had several chances to speak in a presentational manner. One being Flipgrid were we recorded ourselves answering questions that the instructor asked or asking questions to our peers.

The Flipgrid was a great way to to be able to communicate with your peers while also taking your time to understand the conversation. This was a great tool to be able to practice speaking in Spanish and being able to rehearse it over and over again. In the beginning I struggled and this assignment and found myself restarting it over and over again. Then I realized this was helping me speak the language because of all the practice I was getting.

Make learning fun and engaging. Flip is a video discussion and sharing app, free from Microsoft. (n.d.). Retrieved April 21, 2023, from https://info.flip.com/

Presentational Writing

The main way we used presentational writing was through our discussion boards. We used these to express our opinions on a particular topic and also asking our fellow classmates questions regarding those opinions.

These discussion boards were huge when it came to the relating to the topics. They allowed us to inject our own personal lives into what we were studying ate the time. Whether that be what classes we are taking or our job.

Interpretive Listening

Interpretive listening in this class was done mostly within Lingolearning. We listen to situations within fictional characters lives and demonstrated our ability to understand it.

One example of this within Lingolearning was listening to the different moods of students at a university. Some of the students were stressed, while some of then were motivated and happy. It helped me to listen to the students talk instead of me read about it because I could hear the emotion in their voice and it helped me understand where they were coming from.

Interpretive Reading

We learned about the different Spanish speaking countries were we had to look up articles how different countries and how they think and operate.

We had to do research about different countries and while doing this I had the opportunity to read articles from news outlets in these countries. I found that reading these articles that were in Spanish helped me tremendously and it was interesting to read something from a real news source.
