Exploring Culture

The Compentencia Culturals gave me some insight on Hispanic culture.

I found out, even though the American culture and Hispanic culture is a little different we are still very much alike. In videos I watched for class many of them are family oriented. They also do the same activities that Americans do. I had a misconception, I thought that there would be more difference rather than resemblance between the two cultures because we’re on opposite sides of the world. I didn’t know what Hispanic cultures did for entertainment, how they lived, nor their scenery. The videos were very helpful for me because, it made me more aware and interested for Hispanic culture.

Engaging in Communities

I think its good interact with people of different cultures.

It is important to engage in your community and give respect to those that engage in theirs as well. Every so often I eat at Mexican restaurants, it is a nice environment and seeing their pictures, their music, culture and other things they display gives a glimpse of the things they enjoy and represent.

Interpersonal Communication

I had to record me saying words for homework.

The assignment was fairly easy. It was listening to a word and I had to record myself saying back. I feel that each assignment got a little harder and although it was difficult sometimes it challenged me to think and look back at my notes I’ve taken, the work actually made me learn. It really shows your growth when you go from saying only one word to saying complete sentences in Spanish.

Presentational Speaking

I did an interview with one of my classmates. In our interview we had to ask each other questions and keep a conversation going.

My challenge was finding the right words to say, it was hard for me trying to form the sentence in my head mainly because I wasn’t sure if I was saying it correctly. To become more confident in my speaking I try writing my sentences down then repeat it until I can say it without looking at the paper. Next time I’ll try to just stay relaxed and take my time time with answering the question.

Presentational Writing

I have had to complete composition. I addressed my classes and things that I like and dislike typing it out in Spanish.

It was little things I would forget certain words in Spanish or forgetting to put an accent. So I went back and reviewed the material and studied the vocabulary. Studying helped me remember the words better and what they meant so I didn’t hesitate when I started my paper over. Next time i will probably go over the vocab before I start typing up my Spanish paper, so that way I can get it done faster.

Interpretive Listening

In my homework lessons sometimes I have a listening and writing portion. Where I listen to a person speaking in Spanish and I have to type out what they are saying.

The listening portion to the homework comes with five or six questions. The questions repeat themselves twice incase a word isn’t heard. At first it was hard to make out what they were saying, because at the time I wasn’t sure what most of the words meant or how they were spelt and they talked kind of fast. So I tried to go word by word until I figured out the sentence and since I’ve tried just piecing together the statement.

Interpretive Reading

In the Spanish book I had to read an article about different events and where and when they were taking place.

At first I was having trouble understanding the article because their were words I didn’t know and it would confuse the whole sentence for me. So I decided to find words I did understand to answer the questions that pertained to the reading. It was interesting to me that their news for events is similar to ours, that if I were to go travel I could so the same things I like to do back at home.
