Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture
La cultural in my VHL gave me great understanding and perspective on Hispanic culture. In this particular video the woman is showing the food that is ate during the day or what is considered “Las Tapas” in the culture. It is what they normally eat for their lunch, instead of a big meal. Compared to how we eat in America is different, we usually have a big meal for lunch and they don’t. La cultural was helpful to me, I learned about valued practices that take place in Hispanic culture. It gave me a understanding of our eating habits and theirs.
Engaging in Communities
I had to communicate and engage with my classmates and peers and talk in Spanish and do the activities the Professor provided for my classmates and I.
Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad is a site that allows you to communicate with native speakers and enhance your conversation by talking and engaging with speakers you select. You can hold up to hour conversations with the speakers.
My growth with speaking with others, is comfortability. My first talkAbroad I was not comfortable at all, I was tense and I felt that I did horrible. So I tried to relax the next time I did it, and I felt the conversation was better and I was way more comfortable with the person I was talking to the second time and I felt more prepared. I feel to better prepare for it would be to try to practice with one of my Hispanic friends to help understand questions I might be asked or so I’ll be more comfortable giving answers and asking questions before going into my next conversation.
Presentational Speaking
I have no photo or video of the interview, but I had to complete a conversation with native speaker from another country. I felt it was hard in the beginning and I was very nervous and I didn’t think I was prepared for the conversation.
I decided how to make sure the next time I did a talk abroad I would be more prepared than I was the first time.
Presentational Writing

For class we had to write a composition, about our favorite restaurant. We had to write two in total, but I felt it was a challenge because I didn’t feel prepared for the composition the first time. So I decided to work on it and make an outline for the second one. I did way better than I thought I would have. It allowed me to see I can write more than I thought I could.
Interpretive Listening

One of the interpretive listening activities were the listening portion of the VHL Central. Listening to each statement and answer the question.
I had to listen and respond based off what the recording said. My challenge with this was trying to understand what they were saying, so to overcome this challenge I would ask for help from my friends when I didn’t understand a word or phrase.
Interpretive Reading
In English, give a very brief 2-3 line description of interpretive communication activities you read in and out of class this semester, such as articles, stories, websites like the Language Learning Center, etc. that you completed for or related to your Spanish learning. Include a copy of one of these activities; remember to cite it. (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).
Then, write a short reflection paragraph that includes the activities you described above. What was unclear or challenging for you? How did you overcome this difficulty? What did you find most interesting or compelling? What was your takeaway from the reading? How have you grown with each assignment?
