Entry Two

Select four other majors offered by Old Dominion University and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity

Nuclear Medicine Technology – This is an area which utilizes sealed and unsealed radioactive materials in diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Like in any medical field, careers in this field will be dealing with patient records, which are stored in computers. The security of the data itself must be protected using a variety of very secure cybersecurity techniques. Everything from the physical security of patient records and samples, to the security of the network where the data itself is stored has to be accounted for.

Public Health – Public health officials are concerned with protecting people and communities from severe health threats, promoting efforts to improve the quality of life of society. Public health agencies generally have personal data such as addresses, phone numbers and other identifying information. Any data breach would affect the public’s trust, and therefore affect the reliability of any research and planning the sector is conducting.

Real Estate – The real estate industry generally deals with the purchase, sale and rental of properties, as well as the appraisal of properties for the purchase, sale, investment and loan purposes. This industry deals with a lot of personal information on clients, properties and businesses. Much of the real estate industry is conducted online and on the go, so the use of electronic signatures for contracts are utilized to make the process easier and quicker for all involved. The transmission of the contracts must be encrypted due to the personal nature of the information contained, such as interest rates, loan details and banking information. For electronic signatures, there has to be a way to verify the identity of the person signing so that contracts are legitimate. Cybersecurity measures are essential to keeping all this data secure from any threats.

Elementary Education – Early education, and all levels of education, are impacted by cybersecurity due to the nature of tracking the child and person’s educational records.  All schools are required to keep records of personal identifying information during and for years after the student has completed their education. Along with the personal information, data is kept regarding courses, grades, testing and financial information for tuition records. Each of these areas must be protected from cyber threats as most of these records are now digitally stored.
