Davin Teo is a digital forensics investigator that has been doing the job for over 17 years. During the TED talk video, he explained that he got into digital forensics originally by chance. He is an accountant by profession and got into doing IT-related tasks at his accounting firm, from there in the early 2000s when digital forensics was a new field, he applied for a new team that was being assembled in Australia and got the job. Teo goes on to mention that with digital forensics being a new field at the time, there were no direct paths to becoming a digital forensics investigator, as he says, “you either fell into it or you got put into it”. Using his experience as an accountant and the experience he gained on the job doing IT-related tasks help prepare him for the digital forensics investigator position. Digital forensics relates to the social sciences in Teo’s case with him being an accountant, they deal with financials and are required to be very detailed oriented, the same can be said for digital forensics investigators. With them having to recover datasets for investigative purposes and ensuring that the methods and procedures of retrieving evidence have the utmost integrity this allows for the data to be used in an investigation.
