SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Artifacts

A good artifact is a portion or clip of an assignment. It needs to be carefully selected to provide evidence/proof that supports what you are saying in your reflection.

Your reflection will help you determine what that will be. It is a quest for quality. It will represent you academically and professionally, and have personal meaning. It can be written, audio, or video.

At the end, ask yourself if the artifacts best demonstrates your abilities and growth over time.

At the end of your reflection in each section, link or embed the assignment/artifact. If the assignment has multiple pages and seems to overwhelm the section, consider adding just the first page and offering to provide the rest upon request.

Exploring Culture

I started reading books more and taking my mind off of everything. The more I read it also enhanced my vocabulary so it was benefiting me. It has made me grow because in the readings I learn about new things and it gives me for things to dig deeper into.

Reading the bible was a big thing for me to do. It allowed me to make connections with lots of people and form a better understanding of who I am. In the bible you learn about the importance of God and all that he did for our world. I try to read my bible every night and I like to highlight key terms that really stick out to me.

Engaging in Communities

I was a leader for VBS for kids at church over the summer. It was a great bonding experience and it made me realize a lot of things. It is important to engage in these activities with my community to interact with others and do things to help out. I enjoy volunteering for my community.

Interpersonal Communication

I completed the TalkAbroad interviews and I found them very beneficial. They give great feedback and help you to better your Spanish and respond with the right pronunciation. In class we have also used LingoLearning and this gives lots of homework practice for when we have projects. It has a lot of assignments to complete, but in the end it is very helpful.

In the TalkAbroad if we had done this at the very beginning of the year I would’ve failed, but now that we have learned a lot and had lots of practice the TalkAbroad was helpful and went pretty smoothly. The LingoLearning progressively got harder as the semester went on, but you have to take all the information that’s been taught from the 2 years of Spanish and it will make it a lot easier to complete. The reflexive verbs and the command form have been my biggest struggle. Being able to conjugate the words would be a struggle for me at times as well. If I could do things differently I would try to do some more practice on my own and spend more time on the things I would struggle with the most.

Presentational Speaking

In Spanish class we had to complete a TalkAbroad that was 15 minutes total talking to a person online in Spanish. The video was then sent to our professor for grading.

In my business class I had to present a group project and the goal was to create a business and all of its benefits and the money we want to put in to the business to make it happen.

As this semester is coming to an end, I have learned to enhance my presentation skills. The presentations were a lot more challenging this semester compared to last. The topics are more challenging and take more time and dedication. I excelled at getting all of the information that was required for the presentations. If I could do anything differently it would be for me to try not to be as nervous.

Presentational Writing

There are times in Spanish class where we will write a rough draft using only Spanish and can use a vocabulary sheet only. This has helped me better my Spanish because it takes a lot of practice and memorization to be able to form complete comprehending sentences. We had to complete projects where I would need to do lots of research like on mental health and a certain dish of food.

Over time I have improved in Spanish and can form more sentences that make sense without needing assistance. With my rough drafts that we do in class my word count will increase each time we do a new one which means I am improving. To overcome the difficult parts you dimply have to keep practicing no matter what.

Interpretive Listening

My Spanish teacher would go into lots of detail about Spanish vocabulary and it was very helpful. We learned lots of new parts of Spanish and how to conjugate certain words. At the end of each class I would take a picture to add to my notes to practice.

In Spanish class we would listen to Spanish music and see how beautiful it was. We would use the LingoLearning website to do class lectures that gave us activities to complete. There would be times where the activities we did in class were a lot more difficult and required me to practice a lot outside of class time. I found it interesting how the Spanish speaking language is very different compared to English. My vocabulary has increased a tremendous amount.

Interpretive Reading

In Spanish class we had to do research on mental health and stress. I read articles about depression and anxiety and how they affect our daily lives. It was a lot more challenging to write it out in Spanish.

This activity helped me dig deeper into more vocabulary with mental health and stress. It was definitely more challenging to figure out how to make complete sentences with the correct reflexive verbs. It was very interesting to learn all of the new vocabulary for the mental health unit. I enjoyed it.
