Journal 2: What role do engineers have in managing cyber risks?

As we continue to advance in society, one of the many ways being technologically, we will have to build a strong security system in order to protect our valuable information. There is not a day that goes by where someone does not try to hack into another’s personal and sensitive information. It is imparitive that we have trained and certified people in place to protect our computers, networking systems, and information as well.

Cyber Security Engineers, being one of the many career paths that is in the field of Cyber Security, Cyber Security Engineers help businesses and organizations help protect their computers, networking information, and sensitive information from potential hackers as well as cyber attacks. There are many responsibilities that Cybersecurity Engineers have, including tasks such as troubleshooting network and security problems, ensuring that the organization’s data and infrastructure are protected by enabling the appropriate security controls, and lastly, planning, implementing, managing, monitoring and upgrading security measures for the protection of the organization’s data, systems, and networks (Betterteam). It may seem as if Cyber Security Engineers spend most of their time watching a screen, but the position also includes a lot of hands on work as well, such as developing, designing, testing, and deploying security related systems(Infosec).

Although the role of a Cyber Security Engineer may seem straight to the point, Cyber Security Engineers need to possess an expert-level understanding of information security concepts and how to apply solutions effectively. The range of information security tasks is very extensive, from securing IT systems to defining security protocol to installing and configuring security devices. Being in a field such as a Cyber Security, you have to be able to keep up and stayed informed about everything that goes on around you.
