Assignment 5 was an intriguing assignment based on personality. This assignment taught me about how people measure personality and how personality ranges between different cultures. I connected this assignment to what I learned in chapter 6 about measuring personality traits and how culture influences individual personality. This assignment was personally relevant to me because I am American and for this assignment I compared Americans and Mexicans, it highlighted how my own personality has been influenced by my culture. I consider myself to be independent and I try to figure things out on my own because I do not like asking for help and this factor was mentioned as being prominent within Americans in the assignment.

I chose this representative image because it reflects the words that I think of when I think about personality.

From completing this assignment on comparing North American advertisements to advertisements from other cultures and discussing how these advertisements can create stereotypes within society, I learned that there are more similarities than differences in ideas of who men and women are and how they are expected to conform to society’s rules. I learned that along with North American cultures, there are numerous other cultures that portray men in leadership roles and women in homemaking roles. Analyzing these advertisements heightened my awareness to how society paints images of men in more powerful positions and women in less powerful positions. I connected this to what I learned about gender roles and stereotypes in this class and certain aspects that are associated with men and women. Gender stereotypes are heavily influenced by imagery and word choice in advertisements. An example of how this assignment was relevant to a personal experience of mine would be how I had a discussion with an ex of mine about how certain women choose to dress in more revealing clothing and his opinion was that if women dress in ways that show off certain body parts, then their purpose is to awaken the desires of men. I happily told him that often times women do not dress to impress men but rather to feel confident and secure within themselves and they wear clothing that makes them feel good. I analyzed some advertisements that were directed toward the attention of men and they featured women in revealing clothing or women surrounded by men and I believe these depictions influence the ideal that women dress in revealing clothing to gain male attention.

I chose this image because it presents a woman that is rarely represented in media and advertisements. This woman has muscles which is often seen as a “male” or “masculine” attribute. This image goes against the notion that women can not be strong or muscular.

Throughout completion of this assignment, I learned about the experiences of studying abroad and how it can open people’s eyes to what else the world has to offer. I also learned that these experiences bring out a mix of emotions and that these emotions are a part of the journey. I connected this assignment to another class that I have taken in which my professor was American but had lived in different European countries growing up due to the military. My professor incorporated many lessons that she learned from these other countries into examples for class. She described languages, food, cultural differences and adjustments that she experienced while in these countries just as Imani Pugh, whose blog I analyzed, did. This assignment was personally relevant to me because the female who created the blog that I analyzed was African-American, as am I and she traveled to an African country and was able to feel a sense of belonging within the community because the people there resembled her or her family. I think I would feel the same way if I got the opportunity to travel to an African country because my family’s background derives from Africa and there is an unspoken connection to the land and the obstacles that we are presented with.

I chose this visual image because it embodies everything that is experienced within personal growth and the blog that I analyzed mentioned each of these aspects that are listed in this picture.

Completing the second assignment on values opened my eyes to many ways that equality is experienced throughout everyday life. I realized how many obstacles people have been through in the past to create a better today where there is greater acceptance of diversity and individuality. I thought about the strides that are being made and have to continue being made to establish a peaceful life for the masses. This assignment connects with my other psychology courses in being able to identify how equality changes perception in different aspects. This assignment was personally relevant to me because I am an African American female whose family has fought for many years to gain a sense of equality with their counterparts. I respect and admire the groundwork that my ancestors laid into obtaining equality for all because today, I am able to interact with people of all walks of life and potentially change their lives.

I chose this image because it represents how far the world has come in accepting one another and the continued path to equality.
