Transition to College
College has been quite the rollercoaster during these current times. 14 weeks ago, I did not expect to make the memories I made or attend some events I did. I thought that because of Covid-19 we would only be on campus for about two weeks before being sent back home. Moreover, I wish I knew that we were going to stay the full semester on campus so I could have managed my money wisely. I found the library to become very useful to me this semester because I did not have a printer at the beginning of the semester and my laptop broke for a few days.
It was helpful to be close enough to walk over and use the equipment and go back to my dorm. Also, student tutoring was helpful when chemistry became quite difficult to understand on my own. I did attend a SAC event on campus this fall and although it wasn’t academically helpful, it did help to lower stress. Thus, this semester I learned that creating schedules and daily to-do lists will assist me greatly next semester.
Study Habits
Studying has became an essential tool to improving my memory during my first semester of college. My study habits haven’t quite changed but I am learning to increase my hours for each subject. Compared to the beginning of the semester, I spend more time on classes I have tests or quizzes such as chemistry or sociology. Every week I spend an average of 4-6 hours reviewing chemistry material and about 3-4 hours on sociology material.
From study groups to studying alone, I’ve learned the best study habits for myself and applied to my daily routine. For instance, to prepare for exams I have deleted all social media apps off of my device and replaced that time spent reviewing notes and creating quizlets. Also, I have started rewatching lectures and joining office hours for any questions I need answered.
Health Professions Learning Community
This semester I was enrolled in SOC 201S, HLTH 101, and CHEM 105N & CHEM 106N. On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Throughout the semester of the courses, the professors would often connect there topics to healthcare field and other courses. For instance, In sociology, the professor would often use lecture to discuss how we would apply this knowledge towards our future careers. Courses such as CHEM 105N would connect chemistry material and use the knowledge to complete labs in CHEM 106N. Moreover, I did not get a chance to join a health chat this semester but in HLTH 101 I have learned a lot.
