Creating my E-portfolio for my new media technology course was my favorite assignment of them all because, it allowed me to showcase my abilities and creativeness in a personal yet still professional way. From designing the layout and look to creating descriptions of my work for the portfolio, it allowed me to reflect on all that I have done within this last semester. This was more than just creating a place to harbor work, it was enjoyable, fun and different to see a showcase a more business ready side of myself. The portfolio now serves as a tangible representation of myself that I can use to establish networking opportunities. Furthermore, the process of constructing this project has encouraged me to do better when making digital displays. Considering most classes ask for some interpretation of a portfolio or powerpoint, I feel as if I now know and better understand the correct steps to take moving forward. Honing the ability to communicate through media is important and will continue to grow, and having the skills to do so will in turn only continue to grow as well.
Since enrolling in the new media technology course, my day to day interactions with media hasn’t undergone a seismic shift. The activities I use my cell phone for have stayed the same as well. I did however, begin to notice the actions of others online more closely. Week to week I began to see the nuances of others behavior while online. This newfound awareness has not created a drastic change in my own online altercations but has furthered my understanding of different dynamics for others in turn.
Completing COMM 372T has allowed me to refine my professional online presence by optimizing content relevance. It has taught me how to display expertise while curating projects. I have gained the skill of knowing what does and does not enhance visual appeal. This course has taught me how to strategically place key words for improved search ability. I gained more insight on how to leverage networking to my advantage, using things like links, comments, posts, polls and especially “tagging”. The importance of regular updates to your site or portfolio have been engrained in my brain. regular updates insure freshness to your viewers and prevent stale repetition.
For students of the future, I would recommend prioritizing early planning. Make sure to keep up with the assignments to prevent falling behind since work piles quickly. Look at the syllabus prior to the start of the semester to plan your work out. Especially considering that professor Saks rarely goes off schedule, it is that much easier to plan work out ahead. Allow yourself to be creative as you are given an entire semester of designing your portfolio how you see fit as long as the requirements are met. Make sure to use your resources, we are placed in a group me with the rest of your class who may have questions similar to yours. You guys are a team working on individual assignments so lean on them when possible. Be sure to email professor Saks as well if you ever need confirmation on something.
