This course has definitely helped to open my eyes to the complexity of the world around me. In particular, learning about HeLa cells and how they have helped society gave me a unique insight concerning my dad’s cancer (and, yes, I definitely read the book). Everything I have learned from this course has helped me to farther understand the functions of many different types of cells, how they communicate, how they die, and so on and so forth. I now have a deeper understanding of why the cells in our bodies become “sick” and why they don’t always have the ability to fix it. As I have already experienced the many connections between this class and Organic Chemistry, I am excited to see how this class will help me with veterinary courses in the future. This class was definitely a large step up from any high school biology class where the only thing anyone can remember is “Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell”.
