5 most serious of the illegal behaviors online people aren’t aware of.

  1. The most serious on the list is illegal searching online. These searches can result in felonies for which you can do serious prison time, particularly involving explicit content containing minors. This is the most severe of the offenses listed. However, the list is supposed to be things people aren’t aware are illegal. I’m not sure I agree that most people aren’t aware that these searches are illegal.
  2. Faking your identity online. This is another action that can have serious consequences. The article references identify theft as part of this category. Again, I think most people are aware that this is illegal.
  3. Bullying and trolling. Trolling, for the most part, is legal. However, bullying or harassment online can be illegal and have harsh consequences. In some cases, people have been arrested for bullying a victim to the point of suicide.
  4. Collecting data about children below the age of 13. This can be something as simple as taking survey information from a minor below 13. The Children’s Online Protection Act has made this straightforwardly illegal and can result in criminal punishment.
  5. Sharing someone’s address online. There aren’t straightforward laws to prevent doxxing online. However, if this behavior results in other crimes that harm the victim, the act has been prosecuted in connection to those other incidents. This makes the top 5 because this can result in serious harm and have serious consequences.
