Compare the cybersecurity risks between the US and another country.
The United States is a unique country in many respects. It is large, wealthy, diverse and expansive. These traits present both advantage and challenges in terms of cybersecurity. Relative to other nations, American assets are subject to a high volume of cyber-attacks. This makes sense, considering the importance of the US globally, and the amount of wealth available to target here. The US is home to an enormous supply of intellectual property which draws significant interest. Fortunately, the US has the resources to make significant investments to ramp up their cybersecurity capacity. Additionally, the US enjoys well-established legal system in which progress on this front is possible. In 2018, the US government created the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to address the growing threat of cybercrime. According to its website, CISA’s goal is to “understand, manage and reduce risk to our cyber and physical infrastructure.” CISA works within both the private and public sector, critically organizing efforts across a large and diverse cyber ecosystem.
Conversely, Myanmar was listed by SEON’s Global Cyber-Safety Index as having the least secure cybersecurity environment in the world. Among the problems for Myanmar is their lack of legal infrastructure. According to SEON, as of 2021 they had barely addressed cybercrime from a legislative standpoint. Not having this legal framework makes it difficult to approach their security needs in an organized fashion. Additionally, Myanmar is a poor country with limited resources to spend on cybersecurity. This means that even in the presence of emerging legislation, raising sufficient funds to address cybercrime would remain a problem. Compounding matters, there is a global shortage of trained cybersecurity professionals. Even wealthy nations like the US are still struggling to address these shortages, with more than 700,000 cybersecurity jobs available. This puts countries with less to spend on wages at a significant disadvantage when trying to attract qualified talent.
