My intended major is nursing; I chose nursing because I have always had an interest in helping different types of people the best way I can. Ever since I was little, I would think about how I can help not only my peers but society as well.
Because my mom is in the medical field for the military, I have been exposed to the workplace of hospitals and offices at a very young age. Before doctors’ appointments, my mom would take me into work with her and I would talk to her coworkers about what they do within the hospital. Also, there are so many people in my family who are in the medical field or is studying to get into the medical field. My sister graduated college with a degree in kinesiology and is currently going back to school to become a nurse. My mom and my sister are my main reasons as to why I know my knowledge about what I want to do.
My junior year of high school, I got to shadow a sports medicine surgeon and watch him in surgery. I spent two days with him and learned so much about what he has to do the many responsibilities a surgeon has. Not only did I get to watch him perform surgery, I was able to meet his patients and interact with them as well.
I would like to be able to interact and have a relationship with patients; I want to be able to have a one on one relationship with doctors, patients, and their families.
Eventually, I would love to become a pediatric nurse and work with kids. I have always wanted an environment to work with younger children in the job I do.
Out of the ten majors recommended I think the three I’m most interested in are Nursing, Exercise science, and teacher preparation.
Study habits
Studying and homework are two different activities. With studying, I feel concentrated to get more information about the material I need to know; it helps me absorb and learn the material I already learned to get a better understanding. Homework is a way for me to learn about new material and begins the learning process of a topic or subject.
For each class I am taking, I plan to study an hour by myself and thirty minutes to an hour studying with my peers. I expect sociology to be the class I study the most because I have no knowledge of the class before this year. The class I expect to study the least is English.
If I am by myself, I plan to study in a quiet area so I have no distractions; if I am studying in a group I would study in my room with the others, common area inside Gresham Hall, or the Webb Center. Some distractions I can anticipate is my friends and music playing; I can always leave whatever room I am in to go and finish studying or to do homework by myself.
The afternoons are the best time for me to study because I feel awake and more focused than in the morning or evening.
Learning style
Working with a group of people helps me the most than working on something by myself.
Flashcards and having people quiz me help me study.
I don’t know if I will try anything new this semester because I like the way I use my study techniques. They really help me understand the material more, especially studying with other peers.
Transition to college
I think my biggest challenge this semester is managing my time with studying, sleep, homework, and friends.
My biggest challenge moving to college is being away from my mom; she recently got a new job this summer and moved to Texas with my younger brother. Even though they’re states away, my older sister lives in Chesapeake so she’s not that far from me.
Connecting to campus
Office Hours can help me get an A in my classes.
My peer mentor, Jadon, can help me get used to college and help me out if I am ever struggling.
I will use the tutoring center and take advantage of that resource.
I would like to learn more about the financial aid center because I want to be informed and up to date when making my payments.
In high school, I played varsity volleyball, softball, and was involved with Young Life.
I plan to join Young Life and try to play volleyball for fun or even competitively.
