- How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
When cyber technology entered the workplace, it came with upsides and downsides. One of them downsides being opportunities workplace deviance. Workplace deviance can be defined as a person’s desire to act outside of what is considered “normal behavior” and to harm the well-being of an organization. A common reason for this type of behavior is for some kind of personal gain for that individual. One opportunity that has enabled workplace deviance is giving employees access to sensitive information. With this type of access, employees can easily steal it and sell it to competitors within that same business category. Again, this can be for some type of personal gain in return. Examples of this would be a monetary reward or an opportunity to work for that other company. Another opportunity that has been created through cyber technology is cyberbullying and harassment. When this type of technology is implemented into a business, it allows employees to have access to platforms like email and social media securely. This access to these platforms comes with employees being able to cyberbully and harass anyone they want while doing it anonymously. The tools within cyber technology allow employees to engage in deviant behavior anonymously without them ever having to worry about someone recognizing them in a face-to-face interaction. A third opportunity for workplace deviance is employees have the chance to hack into that business’s system. For example, when an employee gains sufficient knowledge working with cyber technology. Eventually, they’ll have enough technical knowledge to identify and exploit vulnerabilities within that system if they wanted to. When vulnerabilities have been exploited, they can put malware into that company’s network to cause damage to their entire operation. That’s when things get really messy with cyber technology. That is just three of the many more opportunities that cybertechnology creates for workplace deviance.
