In this Collection Development Plan data from both the Patrick County High School Library and community demographics informed me of four areas for collection improvement which align with the Patrick County High School’s mission statement to empower all students to learn technology and 21st century skills while incorporating collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and citizenship. In addition, the library’s mission is to provide quality learning experiences designed to equip students with the skill to adapt and thrive in a changing global society. Targeted areas of Improvement in this collection development plan include: an update to the currently outdated policies and procedures to be considerate of the economics in the community for all users, an addition to the PCHS library to have its own collection of e-books and audiobooks for users without the limitations set forth by the current use of this type of collection from the public library, an effective weeding of the nonfiction collection, and an update in the current makerspace collection to prepare for the addition of a Makerspace that is coming soon to the PCHS library.
Evidence-based decision making is an essential part in planning and implementing best practices in school libraries. During this collection development process, I made effective use of data and information collected from the environmental scan and collection analysis process to make informed decisions about the future development of the PCHS library as it related to open and equitable access to resources and services within the school library itself. I took into consideration the current information resources available and developed a plan to improve this area to include diversity, cultural, social, and linguistic needs of the learning environment within Patrick County High School. This collection plan demonstrates advocacy for not only the school library’s resources, programs, services, and policies, but also for school improvements in teaching and learning. This type of advocacy ensures that all learners have unlimited access to information and resources at the school level. Ethical practice is demonstrated by showing support of the ALA Library Bill of Rights by making an effort to develop a plan that implements policies and procedures that provide equal access to resources, support privacy, honor diversity, and provide protection of intellectual property rights.
