Philosophy

As a school librarian, my personal philosophy revolves around creating an environment that fosters a love for reading, learning, and personal growth. Here are the key principles that guide my approach:

1. Access to knowledge: I believe that every student should have equitable access to a wide range of resources and information. I strive to curate a diverse collection of books, digital media, and other materials that reflect different perspectives, cultures, and interests. I ensure that students can easily navigate and find the information they need to support their academic and personal pursuits.

During the process of completing the Collection Development Plan, I made effective use of data and information collected from the environmental scan and collection analysis to make informed decisions about the future collections in the PCHS library as it related to open and equitable access to resources and services within the school library itself. I took into consideration the current information resources available and developed a plan to improve this area to include diversity, cultural, social, and linguistic needs of the learning environment.

2. Empowering learners: I view my role as a facilitator of learning, empowering students to become independent and critical thinkers. I encourage them to explore their own interests, ask questions, and discover information on their own. By teaching information literacy skills, such as effective research methods and critical evaluation of sources, I equip students with the tools to navigate the ever-changing landscape of information.

In my Collaborative Unit, I created a plan including varied instructional strategies that addressed informational literacy through inquiry, innovation, and exploration.

3. Building a reading culture: I strongly believe in the transformative power of reading. I cultivate a vibrant reading culture within the school community by promoting a wide variety of books and organizing reading programs and events. I strive to inspire a love for reading and encourage students to explore different genres, authors, and perspectives. I provide a safe and welcoming space where students can immerse themselves in the joy of reading.

The Annotated Bibliography assignment served as a valuable tool for me as a current school librarian by assisting with resource organization, resource evaluation, useful recommendations that are diversified, instructional needs, time saving, and collaboration.  This learning experience provided me with information to enhance my ability as a librarian to support students and educators in their information needs, reading engagement, and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the school library.

4. Collaboration and connection: I recognize the importance of collaboration with teachers, administrators, and other staff members to integrate library resources and services into the curriculum effectively. By working closely with educators, I can support their teaching goals, provide resources that enhance classroom instruction, and contribute to the overall academic success of students. I also foster partnerships with parents, local libraries, and the wider community to extend learning opportunities beyond the school walls.

My Library of Things supports the sharing economy and sustainability efforts that
everyone should be more mindful of these days. In addition, the county in which I work as a current librarian and also reside, offers a wide variety of recreational activities for its community. I felt it would be useful to include some leisure activities in the Library of
Things that incorporate the local parks, recreation areas, waterways, Blue Ridge
Mountains, and trails throughout the county. Students and their families can enjoy their
surroundings and leisure activities right at their fingertips without the expense of buying
the items typically needed to enjoy these activities.

5. Personal growth and well-being: I believe in supporting the holistic development of students. I strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where students feel supported and valued. I provide resources that address social-emotional learning, mindfulness, and mental health, helping students develop resilience, empathy, and self-awareness. I encourage open dialogue, respect for diverse perspectives, and a sense of belonging.

6. Lifelong learning: I promote the idea that learning is a lifelong pursuit. I encourage students to develop a growth mindset, embrace curiosity, and become lifelong learners. I provide opportunities for exploration, creativity, and innovation through maker spaces, technology integration, and interactive learning experiences. By fostering a love for learning, I aim to empower students to become self-directed learners who continue to grow and adapt throughout their lives.

In summary, my personal philosophy as a school librarian is centered on fostering a love for reading, empowering learners, promoting access to knowledge, nurturing personal growth, and cultivating lifelong learning. I strive to create an inclusive and engaging library environment where students can thrive academically, intellectually, and emotionally.
