SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Address the reflection exercises in each of the following sections. For each section, you will need to embed portions of these assignments and activities as artifacts to substantiate your reflection. Then, at the end of each section, include a link to the document or embed it as a PDF.

Tutorials are available:

An Effective Reflection Is

  • Written in English.
  • A demonstration, explanation, comparison of skill and growth described through what you learned and the challenges you had in that learning while highlighting your best work.
  • A discussion of how you overcame any weakness or obstacles. Explain what you mean.
  • Supported by evidence as represented by your artifacts (course materials, photographs, video, conversations, projects, news reports, authentic materials, etc.).
  • Specific, addressing particular strengths, weakness, skills, transformative experiences, etc., avoiding vague generalizations (ex: “I learned a lot.”).

An Effective Reflection is not

  • Only sharing an artifact without context or discussion.
  • Only a description or explanation of an artifact. Focus on your learning and growth as a result of having completed that experience.
  • An attempt to justify your work to an instructor. Instead, think more broadly about future audiences that might benefit from seeing evidence of your work and the skills you are developing.

Artifacts

A good artifact is a portion or clip of an assignment. It needs to be carefully selected to provide evidence/proof that supports what you are saying in your reflection.

Your reflection will help you determine what that will be. It is a quest for quality. It will represent you academically and professionally, and have personal meaning. It can be written, audio, or video.

At the end, ask yourself if the artifacts best demonstrates your abilities and growth over time.

At the end of your reflection in each section, link or embed the assignment/artifact. If the assignment has multiple pages and seems to overwhelm the section, consider adding just the first page and offering to provide the rest upon request.

Exploring Culture

The practices that helped me understand the different cultures would be in the lingrohub homework. We would have to look up information in Spanish and write them down in lingrohub.

This helped me better comprehend while reading in Spanish and using my context clues to help me understand what I’m reading. This helped me open my eyes to different types of foods and traditions that occur in different Spanish speaking countries. I’ve learned a lot from exploring the culture. I’ve learned about they’re most common sports and most popular athletes. I’ve learned a lot of differences and similarities.

Engaging in Communities

It is very important to engage with your community so that you are aware of what’s going on in your community. Also, if you ever need help with anything it is good to get familiar with the people in your community so that you all can work together.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad is a website where you can engage with native speakers and hold conversations with them. I found it be a great experience to engage with Spanish speakers. The native speakers listen to you closely and try to correct you if you are having trouble.  Another oral spaeakng activity I encountered would be the speaking assignment we did through lingrohub. I would have to listen to the Spanish speaking audio and respond back in Spanish.

I traveled to Mexico this semester and had to speak and comprehend Spanish during my stay. The people in Mexico are so nice and caring and they use hand gestures to help you understand what they are trying to say. This was a little challenging for me because when I travel out of the country the connection is bad so you cannot use good translate. While speaking to different people in Mexico I used as much knowledge as I could from what I have learned through Spanish 1 and Spanish 2.

Presentational Speaking

Presentational speaking that I completed was the project through the Spanish 2 semester. Our professor would provide us with what we will be required to talk about during our project. The class would record a video of themselves speaking Spanish answering the required questions with their face in the camera while also inserting pictures.

One of the projects included the family tree. This project was based on our family. We had to describe at least 5 family members of their personality and characteristics. The video had to be at least 3 minutes long and we had to include pictures. This project challenged me because I was too comfortable speaking fluent Spanish, but I overcame it by study the words I would be using throughout the project.

Presentational Writing

The presentational writing I’ve completed during this course was the in class writing assignment we had to complete. During this the class had to make flyers.

The topic of this project consisted of sports. We had to make a flyer to make people join a sports team. This project was a little difficult because the class had to write from scratch in class. I overcame this by staying calm and focusing on everything I’ve learned. I’ve learned that once you start writing your thoughts starts to show on paper. I’ve exceled at remembering vocabulary words and I could do better by learning how to spell my Spanish words better.

Interpretive Listening

Some interpretive listening assignment we have completed were in the lingrohub homework assignments. All in class the professor would play short videos where we would have to listen and comprehend what they were saying.

One interpretive listening assignment we’ve had to do was when the professor would play sounds, or the alphabet and we would have to repeat after her. Some of the pronunciations were unclear to me but I overcame this by repetitively listening to the pronunciations and repeating them. I gained the knowledge of how to correctly pronounce Spanish words as well as the Spanish alphabet. I also learned how to comprehend better by doing this. Once yiu learned pronunciations the words flow off your tongue better.

Interpretive Reading

Something that I did that involved interpretive communications would be talking to my classmates. Interacting with the different people around me really helped me succeed in this class.

This helped me a lot because my classmates and I are all learning together. My classmates would correct me during the conversation our professor would make us have and I would correct them as well. I have learned things from my classmates like how to use certain verbs and pronouns as well as how to properly pronounce certain Spanish words. This was also challenging because I was scared to speak fluent Spanish to people I didn’t know. Overall this was a good form of communication to help me with my Spanish.
