First let us look at what SCADA is. Supervisory control and data acquisition(SCADA) is a system of software and hardware elements that allows industrial organizations to: Control industrial processes locally or at remote locations, monitor, gather, and process real-time data, directly interact with devices such as sensors, valves, pumps, motors, and more through human-machine interface (HMI) software, record events into a log file. The risks associated with critical infrastructure systems come in three types. There are natural which contain things like an earthquake, tsunami, fire, etc. There is human caused which can include rioting, terrorism, theft, product tampering, etc. Lastly there is accidental or technical, this include system failures that can occur at random moments or any type of power grid shut down.SCADA helps mitigate risks by being on a completely separate network than other networks. This reduces many risks and threats that may be out there and if theSCADA is attached to another network that gets compromised then it can be compromised as well. There are still other ways SCADA is trying to be more secured, from trying to secure VPNs to help protect data as well as building firewalls for added protection. Also, while these changes are being made they make sure to only allow a few select people have access to the systems to limit who comes into contact with it.
