Don’t look at Page 2 until you’ve completed the prompts below.
Do you find any similarities or differences in the colors listed below? First, categorize the following 12 colors into groups, and state the rationale of your categorization.
Black, Blue, Brown, Gray, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, Violet, White, Yellow
Category 1: Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Red, Yellow
Rationale: I put these colors in a category together because the first thing that came to mind when trying to group them was Earth tones.
Category 2: Black, Gray, White
Rationale: I grouped these colors together because they are neutral.
Category 3: Pink, Purple, Violet
Rationale: I think these colors could be grouped together because I think they are most likely to be seen on a color palette together.
Write emotion words which you will associate with each of the following colors.
- Black: Power 7. Pink: Love
- Blue: Calmness 8. Purple: Wisdom
- Brown: Security 9. Red: Strength
- Gray: Maturity 10. Violet: Elegance
- Green: Growth 11. White: Clarity
- Orange: Warmth 12. Yellow: Energy
Did you find any association between your categorization in (1) and the results of (2)?
I believe there is a link between how I described the Earth toned colors in step 2 and how I classified them in step 1. All of the descriptions of blue, brown, green, orange, red, and yellow correspond to how I feel when I am in nature. Without realizing it, I associate the emotions evoked by these colors with how I see them in nature and the same emotions I feel when I’m in nature.

Target Person | Minutes |
Your parent | 1 hr |
Your older sibling | 30 mins |
Your boyfriend or girlfriend | 45 mins |
Your best friend | 30 mins |
Your colleague | 10 mins |
Your client | 15 mins |
Your boss | 15 mins |
Did you find any differences in the results? Yes
If you said “yes” in the previous question, who will you wait for the longest time and who will you wait for the shortest time? Why?
I would wait for my parents the longest time. I believe this is due to the relationship we already have. My parents are prompt people so if they were ever late I could accept that because they always show up for me on time any other time. I would wait the shortest time for a colleague. I couldn’t see myself waiting long waiting for a colleague simply because I believe my relationship to the rest of the people listed would be the least developed with this person. I am not a very patient person when it comes to being on time, so I think 10 minutes is the most time I could wait for a colleague.

For this assignment I chose the item to archive from module three, which was finding a picture that best represents my culture. I chose to select images of natural hair because it means a lot to my culture as well as my own femininity being an African American woman. Natural hair in the Black community has always been a prominent subject whether it be good or bad. Not only does my own natural hair mean so much to me but all of ours means a great deal to me because we have faced plenty of discrimination not only because of our skin color but hair as well. I was not always fond of my hair though, there was never much representation within our community when I was growing up. I would always see straight, fine hair and would think that something was wrong with me so I begin straightening my hair in the 5th grade up until about my freshman year of high school. This was a big transition for me, simply loving an aspect about yourself as simple as hair should seem easy but it was something that was difficult for me.
We have struggled with loving our natural hair since the beginning of slavery where slave traders shaved the heads of enslaved Africans, to permed, relaxed, and dyed hair just for us to ‘fit in’ with society, to job and school discrimination because our hair is deemed unprofessional or unkempt. I love seeing Black people embrace their hair and not worry about what anyone has to say about it. So I chose for hair to represent my culture because it can be so sacred and spiritual. Black hair is so unique and versatile, the hairstyles can be so intricate and are far more than just a style. Natural hair perfectly represents Black culture and our identity, there is so much history behind it brutal and beautiful but to me it is greatly appreciated because I could not disregard the process my ancestors went through for us to get to this point to even embrace ourselves fully.
