When deciding what major I would choose as my Parallel Major, I wanted to do something as closely related to nursing or as tied to nursing as I could. Thus, I decided to pick Human Services as my Parallel Major. This is because it is similar to nursing in the way that people that work in Human Services are helping others. If for some reason I decide I don’t want to work with the medical side of things I could do this and still work in a hospital setting. Thus, it would be giving me the best of both worlds. In the process of my brief research I found out that people with this degree can work as a Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Worker, a Social and Human Service Assistant, a Probation Officer and Correctional Treatment Specialist, and a Substance Abuse and Behavioral Disorder Counselor. It is also possible for you to obtain a career as a Child Life Specialist, a Psychologist, and a Sociologist. The career that I found to be most fitting to my aspirations is a Case Manager. A Case Manager works in a hospital setting, and they are healthcare professionals. The purpose of their job is to provide help to families going through a rough time. They aide these people with identifying their goals and helping them accomplish them by connecting them with the proper facilities or services. Employment opportunities in this field are expected to grow to 19% by 2020. Not only this, but they earn on average $59,000. A case manager with an RN credential earns on average $70,000. The plan I would use to pursue this major would be based off of what I found in the course requirements for Human Services (all of these courses have been listed below). On top of taking these courses, I would also want to try and gain professional experience. The best way for me to do this would be for me to do internships in as many different career pathways (relating to Human Services) as I could. If I were to ever need to talk to the advisor for my last name in human services, I would go to Joseph Hassell. Choosing a Parallel Major in Human Services would be what’s best for me specifically because it would still give me the ability to help people and work in a hospital if I so wished.
