SPAN 102

Exploring Culture

The practices that I used to help me understand the cultural perspective of Spanish were the videos and pictures provided in the course. It was very important that I got to see pictures and videos of Spanish culture during this course because I am a visual learner. The videos and pictures helped me understand and appreciate other people and their cultures. I have been more open minded and more interested as the course went on, I have more love and respect for Spanish culture, and I value the language much more than before.

Engaging in Communities

I try and engage in my community by helping out the homeless and giving back to charity. I also have started teaching the teenagers at my church. Most importantly, I try to impact the youth back home in Nigeria. I always want to make sure I lift others up and I don’t leave anyone left behind. The sky is the limit for everyone and the more we all work together we can accomplish a lot. Not everything you can do by yourself, so It’s best if you help others now because someone will surely help you when the time comes.

Interpersonal Communication

In Spanish 102 I was able to talk to people in different countries as well as my Spanish 102 Professor. We talked about our daily routine, clothing, places, and food. I was able to get positive feedback during the 15-minute interviews and they made it very easy for me to understand what they were saying.

In Spanish 102, I practiced a lot on my communication skills. Talk abroad helped me a lot as well as talking to my classmates during class. I was very nervous due to the fact I wasn’t good in talking in Spanish but after practicing and getting the proper help that I need I became more confident in myself, and I am now able to speak almost as fluently in Spanish than I was before.

Presentational Speaking

During class, we completed a lot of speaking activities in groups and on our own.

Spanish 102 was way more intense and difficult than I thought, first day of class and the teacher is talking strictly in Spanish. As time went on though I became more relaxed and was able to understand little by little. Practicing in groups and on my own helped me a lot as well.

Presentational Writing

In this course I had completed two compositional writing assignments. The first composition was an interview about a recent clothing trend in a high school and the second composition was about reviewing about a restaurant we had been too.

Interpretive Listening

In Spanish 102 we did a lot of interpretive listening during class, through homework and also exams. We listened to audios and watched stories that explained Spanish culture.

After we were given an assignment to basically answer questions that had to do with the audio we listened too or story we just watched. It was very difficult to understand what they were saying in the audio but with time and patience I began to understand. The stories were easier to understand because it was visual, and it gave better explanation on what the people were doing or saying.

Interpretive Reading

In Spanish 102 we completed a few different assignments that involved interpretive reading. I read articles from the textbook and other homework assignments.

In Spanish 102 we got to talk more in Spanish during class and outside of class. We listened to stories and audios about Spanish people and its culture. Reading in Spanish was very hard though because I did not really understand what the words were saying but with time and practice the words became more familiar. Writing in Spanish was another hard thing for me to do but I got better at it as time went on. I found a new love in the Spanish language and culture. I have learned so much during this course and I appreciate everyone that has helped me improve.
