Cybersecurity, data privacy, and protection are some of the most concerning issues for many today. With enhanced protection, the ways to hack and exploit data are also advancing. Previously, cybersecurity was seen from the security perspective only. Lately, many scholars have changed the regime and have started looking at it from the perspective of deviance, social issues, and victimisation. As a result, a new branch has emerged known as cyber criminology. The main focus of this branch is to study the experiences of diverse populations that previously did not get scholarly attention. The paper under review is “Understanding Deviance and Victimization in Cyber Space among Diverse Populations”, written by Insun Park who is a Ph.D. scholar at the University of Akron, USA. The main question of the research is whether the impact of cybercrime is experienced differently across the diverse population and especially among the marginalized and vulnerable sectors of society.
Vast research has been conducted to reach conclusions. Several research methods have been used in the research, and they are interviews, surveys, questionnaires, and case studies. The data has been collected through the mentioned sources and also by consulting the literature review. Recently, many scholars have shown interest in cyber criminology. The paper targets several aspects of social sciences, especially criminology and sociology. Cybercrime is seen as a social problem. Moreover, the focus is on the difference between the incidents across different populations. The impact of different social structures and institutions on cyber deviance is also discussed. It has been concluded that just like all other crimes, the reason for committing a cybercrime is socially constructed. Behind every cybercrime, there is a social factor involved. Similarly, the population in minority, marginalized communities, and discriminated populations have experienced more severe and frequent cyber crimes. The research paper targets the topics discussed in the class especially the technical and social aspects of cybercrimes.
The conclusion of the research motivates lawmakers to make comprehensive and structured laws against cybercrimes and especially to protect minorities and discriminated populations because they are the most vulnerable. It also highlights the concerns and challenges of marginalized communities. The data gathered in the research shows that marginalized groups are quite concerned about their cybersecurity. Further research in the field of cyber criminology and sociology will provide more evidence and solutions to the problems.
