Week 12 – Journal Entry 14

Even though the internet is full of dangerous threats, most users unknowingly perform activities on the internet that are deemed illegal. Andryi Slynchuk has wrote an article describing the eleven most common activities that are performed unknowingly by users, which are illegal. Those eleven things include using unofficial streaming services, torrenting, using copyrighted images, sharing passwords, and other information, bullying and trolling, recording a VoIP call without consent, faking your identity online, using other people’s internet network, collecting information about children, and extracting audio from YouTube. However, five of those eleven activities are dubbed the most serious violations. First, using unofficial streaming services is considered illegal as most content is stolen from official streaming services or recorded at a theater venue. Streaming paid content on unofficial streaming services is illegal, and the streaming service might even try to steal your personal information. Furthermore, streaming illegally is a copyright violation, which may result in legal actions. Next, using torrent services to obtain paid content is illegal. Most users unknowingly use torrent services to obtain copies of content without paying is a violation of copyrights owned by the creators. In addition, it is unfair to the creators and is considered theft of paid content. The third activity that is deemed illegal is faking your identity with the objective of deceiving or defrauding the person themselves. Using the information of somebody else as your own without appropriate consent is illegal, especially if it is used for illegal activities. Using the internet networks of other people is a serious violation. Using another person’s internet network that they pay for is illegal because it is considered Wi-Fi theft. Additionally, using the Wi-Fi that belongs to someone else may be dangerous as the piggy backer can be hacked by attackers on the network. Lastly, extracting audio from YouTube is a serious violation due to the reasons of audio theft. Using audio without the owner’s consent is theft, and the owner of that audio can pursue legal action against the thief. Additionally, theft of copyrighted audio violates the copyright of the creator.
